Colin Cook (EngSci 1T2) has been awarded the prestigious C.D. Howe Memorial Foundation Engineering Scholarship. Only two of these scholarships are awarded each year across Canada to engineering students who have completed their first year, one to a male student and one to a female student.
C.D. Howe had an illustrious career in academia, industry and public service. At the time of his death in 1960 the Toronto Star told its readers that "Howe's monument is everywhere. He was the chief builder of modern industrial Canada, and one of the greatest Canadians of all times." Mr. Howe is recognized as one of Canada's greatest engineers. It is for this reason that the C.D. Howe Memorial Foundation, founded in 1962, thought it fitting to establish two scholarships in engineering in his memory.
The scholarship award criteria are based on academic performance, leadership qualities as evidenced by volunteer and extracurricular activities, and quality of reference letters. This is the second time that a U of T engineering student has won this award. In 2002, Danica Lam (EngSci 0T5) was the recipient.
